WHAT'S THAT SOUND?  UNFINISHED BUSINESS GOALS?!?

LET'S GET BACK ON TRACK!
By Diane Snead

QUICK TIP:  Sort your to-do list by priority, rather than what’s easiest to get done.

We’re almost halfway through the year and summer is quickly approaching.  But before you think too much about sunny days and outdoor activities, take a moment to reflect on the year so far.  How are your business goals coming along?  Did they stall after January?  Those goals are no less important now and there is still time to accomplish them.  Let’s look at how you can get back on track.

Our special guest writer, Janna Hoiberg with ActionCOACH – the world’s #1 Coaching Firm – weighs in this month:

Results in your business are as good as the details of your goals.  If increased profits are critical, then get specific.  A goal of increasing profits by 10% over the next six months is great; however, what is the plan to make that happen?  Make your goals SMART:  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results, Timeframe.  If goals are not SMART then it is like boarding a plane in Denver with a destination of East.  East can land you in Boston or Miami.  Both are East and are very different destinations.

What needs to happen to accomplish the goals you set for the year?  Refocusing goals happens by first determining if the goal is SMART, then applying a detailed action plan with each goal.  As an example: a goal of climbing Pikes Peak is laudable.  However, without the details as to how this will be accomplished the chance of meeting that goal is greatly diminished.  A SMART goal is as follows:  Specific:  Climbing Pikes Peak from the Craigs on August 28th, Measurable:  Walking three days per week a minimum of 45 minutes with ½ the time walking uphill.  Attainable:  That often depends on mindset, if you say you can and are committed then you will make it happen.  Reasonable:  If you can’t breathe at 8000 feet, then breathing at 14,000 feet may not be reasonable.  Timeframe:  A date is set, August 28th - is it on your calendar and are distractions removed to allow this to happen?

Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things…I am tempted to think…there are no little things. – Bruce Barton

In reviewing your original goals, assess why you haven’t been actively pursuing them.  Have you been too busy, or haven’t had the time?  Essentially you’re saying that your business’ success is not a priority.  Procrastination is a common culprit, but can be easily overcome with the right time management tools.  Ask Type A what the best tips are to avoid procrastination!

It’s really up to you to decide where your business will be 6 months from now.  Will you give in to excuses?  It’s not too late to bring your goals back into focus.  So stop reading, start doing, and celebrate your accomplishments!
