Has “Getting Organized” been on your New Year’s resolution for too many years to count?  We all have good intentions, but maybe the reason you’ve not succeeded the previous years has been because “I’m going to get organized” is too vague of a statement to be considered a goal.  Remember last month I discussed goal setting?  Here’s a refresher:  December Newsletter  All goals must be specific and quantifiable.  To finally get organized, you need to specifically define what that means to you.

Maybe these examples will get you thinking:

  • Too many business cards scattered everywhere
  • Overwhelmed with stacks of paper clutter on my desk (and floor, and shelves…)
  • Not reconnecting with my previous clients
  • Interruptions are ruining my productivity
  • I can’t ever find anything in my filing cabinet

Sound familiar?  Type A has several solutions for these problems.  By implementing these tried and true strategies you might save an HOUR a day, every day!  What would an additional hour each day – for a whole year – mean to your business?

If “Getting Organized” has been on your to-do list for far too long, why not take advantage of GO Month today?  Here are some easy tips to get you started:

  • Keep a large calendar on your wall, not on your desk.  No need to shuffle active piles around to see your calendar.
  • Set aside 5 minutes at the end of every work day and do a “Clean Sweep”, putting papers and supplies back in their home and getting prepared for tomorrow.
  • Use your in and out boxes only for active items.
  • Keep a phone log to document all in- and out-bound calls – stop using those Post-Its!
  • Turn off your email alert and check emails only at specified times during the day.
  • Use a tickler file to help keep track of future action items.  This works well for paying bills, client follow up, announcements for upcoming networking events, etc.

The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year.      – John Foster Dulles

Thousands of busy professionals just like you are jumping on the National GO Month bandwagon – maybe even your competition.  What will YOU do differently this year to assure your organizing success?
